Biography

Ana Moura is a Portuguese singer of Fado, one of the most sucessful singers of this musical style, having already sold over a million records worldwide. With African family origins, in additon to the influences that she had by the music of Amália Rodrigues, Ana Moura’s music is also influenced by rhythms and dances of Afrika, and by gypsy traditions and spanish flamenco. Her career began in a karaoke bar where she sang a fado, unaware the guitarist António Parreira, one of the distinguished interpreters of portuguese guitar, was present. Immediately, both developed a partnership, which culminated in Ana Moura’s career with exclusive performances in Lisbon’s fado houses.
Because of her quick success, Ana Moura moved to Carnegie Hall, in New York, where she joined on “The Rolling Stones Project”. In 2010, Ana Moura presented her debut album “Leva-me Aos Fados”, which was at the top of sales charts during many weeks. Her voice captured the interest of the singer Prince, having performed together for the first time ate the “Festival SBSR 2010”, and since then they quickly developed a professional and friendly relationship. In 2012, her album “Desfado” has been considered her best work, making part of the portuguese music heritage of XXI century. And her last work “Moura” was edited in 2016. In this recent years, she performed on stages all over the world, singing with Prince, the Rolling Stones, Herbie Hancock, or Caetano Veloso. From fado, through funk, soul, flamenco, jazz, rock or samba, Ana Moura has sung all musical genres, always gathering the most appreciated critics. In fact, in 2016, once again at Carnegie Hall in New York, Ana Moura dedicated the Angolan theme to Prince’s memory, who had died a few days before. In this tribute, Ben Ratliff wrote about her voice, that Ana Moura “has a strong and clear range of notes at the highest points of her alto voice, on which she relies heavily, with powerful effects”. Also, “The Guardian” acknowledged that “she has a tremendous presence and voice.”
In 2018, Ana Moura, with Mariza, starred in the opening of the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest, held in Lisbon.

Lyrics

Passo os meus dias em longas filas
Em aldeias, vilas e cidades
As andorinhas é que são rainhas
A voar as linhas da liberdade
Eu quero tirar os pés do chão
Quero voar daqui p’ra fora e ir embora de avião
E só voltar um dia
Vou pôr a mala no porão
Saborear a primavera numa espera e na estação
Um dia disse uma andorinha
Filha, o mundo gira, usa a brisa a teu favor
A vida diz mentiras
Mas o sol avisa antes de se pôr
Eu quero tirar os pés do chão
Quero voar daqui p’ra fora e ir embora de avião
E só voltar um dia
Vou pôr a mala no porão
Saborear a primavera numa espera e na estação
Já a minha mãe dizia
Solta as asas, volta as costas
Sê forte, avança p’ra o mar
Sobe encostas, faz apostas
Na sorte e não no azar”

Lyrics (English)

I spend my days in long lines
In villages, towns and cities
the swallows are queens
Flying the lines of freedom
I want to take my feet off the ground
I want to fly out of here and go by plane
And just come back one day
I’ll put the suitcase in the basement
Savor spring while waiting and in season
One day said a swallow
Daughter, the world turns, use the breeze to your
advantage
life tells lies
But the sun warns before it sets
I want to take my feet off the ground
I want to fly out of here and go by plane
And just come back one day
I’ll put the suitcase in the basement
Savor spring while waiting and in season
My mother already said
loose the wings, turn the back
be strong, go to the sea
climb slopes, place bets
in luck and not in bad luck.
